Climate Week 2009
Written by Administrator
Climate change is an issue that impacts the entire global community. Most recent natural disasters could be related to this serious environmental threat. The lives of millions of people and other living beings are being devastated by rising temperatures, floods, droughts and storms. These environmental problems have intensified financial and food insecurity. The severity of these issues has pressured world leaders to give serious consideration to climate change and other environmental concerns. On December 7, international leaders will gather in Copenhagen, Denmark for the UN Climate Change Conference to discuss the ways in which governments and global citizens can improve the well-being of our planet and formulate an economic plan that will lead to long-term prosperity.
In preparation for the Copenhagen meeting and in the spirit of “going green,” a series of events and activities known as Climate Week will be launched in New York City from September 20 through 26. The Global Campaign for Climate Action (GCCA), the TckTckTck Campaign, the Climate Group, the UN Foundation and the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) are among the organizers of Climate Week. Religions for Peace-USA and Religions for Peace-International are proud participants of this week-long observance of action and awareness. Together, RFP-USA and RFP-International hope to mobilize local and national faith communities into action.
Religions for Peace-USA acknowledges that the week of September 20 is a time of religious observance for our friends in the Muslim and Jewish communities. If unable to attend local events, RFP-USA encourages members of these faith communities to continue growing in knowledge and awareness of climate change and to incorporate some form of environmentally conscious actions in their observance, worship or celebration.
Join us in vocalizing our concern for the well-being of our planet and our future.
